What is attic ventilation balance?

Attic ventilation balance is the correct proportion of soffit intake vents to ridge or gable exhaust vents that allows continuous air circulation through the attic space.

Attic ventilation balance refers to the correct intake-to-exhaust vent ratio that keeps air flowing steadily through your attic. Proper balance typically means approximately equal net free area between soffit intake vents (at the lower eaves) and ridge or gable exhaust vents (at the top). When this balance is off, neither intake nor exhaust dominates, and the attic becomes stagnant or turbulent, creating conditions that damage your roof.

An imbalanced attic causes two major problems. First, inadequate exhaust relative to intake traps warm, moist air in winter, which condenses on roof decking and framing. This moisture feeds ice dam formation at the eave where melting snow refreezes, and it rots wood structure over time. Second, excessive exhaust venting without matched intake creates negative pressure that pulls conditioned air from living spaces into the attic, wasting energy and causing similar moisture problems. Insufficient ventilation also lets summer heat linger in the attic, accelerating shingle aging and shortening roof life by 5 to 10 years.

Ontario's seasonal temperature swings and high winter snow load make balanced ventilation essential. A qualified roof inspector or maintenance contractor can assess your current vent configuration, measure net free area, and recommend adjustments such as additional soffit vents or exhaust modifications to achieve the balance your attic needs.
