What is drip edge?
Drip edge is a metal flashing installed along the perimeter of a roof that channels water away from the fascia board and prevents water intrusion into the structure.
Metal edging installed along the eaves and rakes of a roof, drip edge directs water off the roof and away from the fascia board, soffit, and underlying framing. Without it, water running down the roof simply hangs from the edge and drips along the face of your home, soaking the fascia and potentially entering the walls and attic space. Over time, this causes rot in wooden fascia, deterioration of siding, and interior water damage.
Drip edge comes in two main profiles: eave drip edge (horizontal installation at the bottom edges of the roof) and rake drip edge (angled installation along the sloped side edges). Most Ontario contractors install it with shingles and underlayment during new roof installation or replacement, positioning it so that shingles lap over the top edge and direct water down and away.
Ontario building codes require drip edge as part of the roofing assembly. The National Building Code and provincial amendments mandate water management to protect building envelopes. Proper installation ensures water flows into gutters or safely off the roof perimeter, not into walls or framing.
Drip edge is typically galvanized steel or aluminum, with aluminum chosen in areas prone to corrosion. Contractors installing new roofs will include it as standard. If you need repair or roof replacement, confirm your contractor specifies drip edge at all edges.
