What is a TPO membrane?

TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) is a single-ply synthetic membrane used for flat and low-slope roofs, installed with heat-welded seams and known for high reflectivity.

TPO stands for thermoplastic polyolefin. It is a synthetic rubber-like sheet material installed as a single continuous layer across flat and low-slope roof surfaces. TPO membranes are typically white or light gray, which makes them highly reflective and helps reduce heat absorption into the building below.

The defining feature of TPO roofing is its seam construction. Rather than using adhesives or fasteners alone, TPO seams are joined using hot air welding, where heat fuses overlapping sheets together into a permanent bond. This welding method creates a stronger, more durable seal than traditional glue-down approaches and helps prevent leaks at critical junction points.

TPO membranes are popular in Ontario for flat roofing applications on commercial buildings, industrial facilities, and some residential structures. The material is lightweight, relatively quick to install, and resistant to UV exposure and weathering. Its reflectivity also supports energy efficiency by reducing the roof surface temperature, which can lower cooling costs during summer months.

Common thickness ranges from 45 to 100 mils, and the material can accommodate building movement without cracking. TPO is manufactured by companies like Firestone, Carlisle, and Versico, and is specified in roofing plans where durability, reflectivity, and long-term performance matter.
